movement around the testing room
The module indicates that moving about the testing room promotes stress on students. I would argue the point that moving about the room is required at times. We utilize computers to test and movement about the room is required to ensure all testers can be observed. Perhaps this is a drawback to the room set up, but indeed necessary.
I agree that watching eliminates cheating. Not walking the room. Walking the room can not only be distracting and add stress to the students but may also give the feeling of being thought of as cheaters.
When teaching in a classroom setting such as a computer lab it is somewhat difficult to move around between rows without disrupting student while they are taking a test. So, I usually sit in the back of the computer lab to have a full visual on all of my student and their computer screens.
I like to be in the back of the room during a test. students know you can see them and they cant see you.
I agree that when the instructor walk around the
class with an exam is being given prevents cheating.
I thought the suggestion of not moving around the classroom was interesting. I always thought that is what was recommended. I am glad to see others here that do suggest that walking around is okay, and sometimes preferred.
Hi Fran,
Students should not have to wonder where you are! If they are looking for you this should definitely be a RED FLAG.
Patricia
I appreciate the advise of standing in the back of the class when students are testing it keeps them wondering where your at instead of in front and knowing when your eyes move away from them good advise.
Hi Leslie,
I agree the moment students realize you are not watching them while testing they will certainly try to take advantage of the situation by cheating. Watching minimizes cheating.
Patricia
I agree with moving around the room. If students see that I am not watching, it encourages cheating or taking a very long time to complete the exam
I would have to agree with Lori. I move around the computer lab so that I can see every screen. My students are used to me moving around during lecture and lab time, so they are comfortable with that during a test.
Lori-
I agree with you. I think it is important to move around the room when they are taking a test. Especially a practical exam to make sure that the student is not moving any parts of the practical exam. Also this prevents students from skipping ahead if no one is next to them and finishing too early.
I don't think that it causes more stress to the test taker. Most are too involved in what they are doing to care that you are watching them. I believe this was also stated by someone else.
I agree, Lori. I think it is important as instructors to move around the room, not only during a test, but during lectures, and throughout the class.
It eliminates a lot of "disruptive" behaviors, such as sleeping, use of cell phones, cheaters, and those who are ill-prepared.
With this information, the instructor is able to evaluate the class, and better meet all needs.

Hi Lori,
I concur! Movement in a room can certainly minimize cheating, and I have not seen nor heard how movement causes a student to become stressed. Those that are so involved with their test do not even realize where the instructor is.
