I usually position myself very close to the student that i suspect is cheating and that usually makes the student change the behavior. It is sometimes necessary to change sitting arrangements for an exam if you do not have proof of student cheating but you suspect it is going on.

I agree, spread the students out, clear off their desks, and sit in the back of class helps to discourage any cheating and maintain the integrity of your class.

I think it's important not only to the student cheating but also to maintain the integrity of the cource and the other students that we do things to make if difficult to cheat, if possible. By moving throughout the class, having students remove everything from desk, and having the students spreadout, this may lessen the opportunity for cheating to occur.
