Cheating Students

I am curious how others address the cellphone in their lap or near by "in case of emergencies", and also there need to go to the restroom during an exam.

The class I teach consists of daily tests on the computer. I recently had a student who tried texting her boyfriend the question and he would respond with the answer. Another time, she copied the questions/answers onto her MySpace account, she didn't think I would know but she posted what she did on Facebook. I knew what she was going to do before class, so I stood behind her the entire class. Wow, they will try anything...

Hi Allan,
Yes, bathroom breaks during test time can be questionable. I like it how you allow your students to go to the bathroom before test time. You are disappointed in students when you catch them cheatig. I am sure you reprimanded the student you caught cheating. You certainly had evidence.

I too have had certain students go to the bathroom during a test and I wondered if they were looking up an answer to a question. I felt better when I realized she did not take her purse. I usually make a point to give them a break before the test and let them know there will be no bathroom breaks during the test. If a student absolutely has to go I must let them, but the class knows that they are not suppose to need to. I have caught a student cheating with notes in her hand and she tried to hide it up her sleeve. I was so disappointed in her.

Hi Charles,
Great way to put it! Students must realize they are only hurting themselves when they decide to cheat.

I try to reinforce you only really cheat yourself You've spent a lot of money to end up as ignorrant as you started.

This is interesting to me. I have noticed a cell phone in a students lap. I wonder that is all about. I typically tell students the first day about not using cell phones in class, however.

I did have a student that went to the bathroom during an examination. I didn't think too much of it, as she was a good student in class. Her grades were always good. She was always present.

If it was a student that had poor attendance, didn't pay attention in class, didn't show interest, etc.; I wonder how I would have reacted.
