I like to walk about the class , watch students I usually will sit in the back of the class to grade papers that way I can hear anyone talking or see little things like texting or books that happen to be open lol
Hi James,
You give your students a lot of flexibility. I am sure they appreciate the flexibility. By picking which questions they want to answer and in whatever order, this should minimize cheating.
Patricia
Hi Jimmy,
To deter cheating the students must be monitored.
Patricia
Hi Aaron,
I like the idea of making the watching equal. You made a great point!
Patricia
I find that keeping the student seperated enough will help to eliminate cheating as well....if the other student is far enough away it will be pretty obvious if someone is cheating from them.
Most of the tests that I give require application of knowledge by solving a problem and communicating their solution in an essay format. I have found that that is very difficult to cheat on an essay. However, I do watch students from the front of the class (I’ve never tried the back) so that I can see students faces and eyes. I also stand and walk around, which according to the course material is a no-no, but with large classes I can’t properly observe and hold all of the students accountable without some roaming cat behavior. I do tell my students that I will be roaming the isles while the take the test; why should the students that sit in the back or the front get the most scrutiny – I try to equal it out.
Hi Shelley,
How do you think this tactic reduces cheating?
Patricia
Hi Carlos,
These are all great ways to minimize cheating. It sounds like you do a super job administering your exams.
Patricia
Some of the ways that I have found to reduce the opportunity for cheating is first by earning the trust of my students and consistently monitoring and assessing my students and classroom.
Hello Terri,
Walking around during a test is a must. It minimizes cheating.
Patricia
Hi Christina,
Do you ever feel that the work online could have been done by someone else, and if so how do you prove it and reprimand the student?
Patricia
I use different versions of the test when it consists of objective questions--T/F, M/C & fill-in the blanks. I like to rely on brief essays occasionally. I usually allow them to pick so many questions from the list to respond to and allow them to complete them in any order they choose.
Hi Melinda,
Do you feel there is cheating online? Please expand.
I mostly teach online. I use online tests and use test pools. I also scramble the questions and answers when possible.

Hi Steve,
You cover many bases. It is obvious you do a great job to minimize cheating. Great points presented.
Patricia
Hi John,
You do not give students any reason to say they don't know. What are your rules?
Patricia
at our school we have a set of rules for test taking i put it up on the power point every time we take a test that way there is no questions as to what the rules are and the student will not have the same test as his neighbor.
Some ways I use to reduce the opportunity for cheating are:
A.Spread out the students during testing.
B.Frequently moving around the class and
observing the students from different angles
to make sure their eyes do not wander.
C.Before the test,I point out the penalties for
cheating and there is a zero tolerance policy.
D.Thoroughly covering the subject material
so the students feel confident about taking
the test.
E.I make myself available for students that
need tutoring.
In the online teaching environment, cheating mainly centers around plagiarism. This means that I must be on the lookout for certain factors in a paper, such as changes in tone or writing style. Tools such as Turn It In are a wonderful took for keeping students honest, and helping to make them better writers overall.
Be aware; walk around; help the students feel comfortable and prepared. Remind the students that they work for themselves-their goals.
