Cheating
Student cheating should not be tolerate at all. He/ she will be cheating themself from the education they are suppose to be gaining. Some type of disciplinary act should be taken.
It is so hard to see students trying to cheat especially in a medical clinical classroom. Students really do not understand that they will not be able to "cheat" in the real world, they are going to need to fully understand the knowledge of the task at hand.
Hi Jessica,
That's right! Do not tolerate cheating. When students get into the workplace, and they are unable to perform, it looks bad on the student, the institution, and the instructors.

I agree. Some action needs to take place. The area I teach is both hands on and textbook. In the medical field you need both, so a cheating student can't perform their job in a clinical setting without having a full understanding of the information from the textbook. Cheating in the classroom effects the patients they work with, therefore it can't be tolorated.
It's good to remind students that cheating isn't allowed in the real world. Get caught breaking the rules at your job, and you will be fired.
Cheating should be dealt with by punishment so as to indicate that it will not be tolerated.
Hi Anna,
I separate my students, utilize different versions of the test, ensure unneeded materials are not on the desk, all cell phones must be put away, I walk the room, and I simply let my students know at the beginning of the test that they will be watched during the test.

Cheating is something that I am always trying to stay on top of. With the new technology I have learned that there are many more ways to cheat than I could imagine. If I catch someone (with proof) they get a 0. Often I have to spend extra time looking for their sources to check for cut & pasting. Then I print out their source and hand it to them with their returned project. What are some of the things you do to minimize cheating?
I agree with your comment about patient lives at stake. If the student has to cheat in the academic setting then you have to belive that they do not have the necessary knowledge to handle "real life" situations. I also feel that a person who cheats is only cheating them selves because patients in todays healthcare systems can spot a person a mile away who in not sure of what they are doing.
I agree. coming from a medical field cheating takes on a whole lot more than just dishonesty. Lives of patients are at steak here.
Cheating in any form should not be allowed at all whether it is on an exam or any type of assignment. As long as material of the subject handed out to the student is clear and organized, and consequences of cheating are explained clearly in the syllabus and all appropriate measures are taken to minimize cheating the instructor should feel satisfied that his/ her job was done well. If the student gets into the habit of cheating on assignments or tests that same behavior will continue in the professional field. By cheating the student should understand that he/she is actually cheating himself/ herself.
I agree completely. As an English Instructor, plagiarism is a cancer run wild. It amazes me that students will still copy and paste directly from a website and turn it in. And this is after they've uploaded it to turnitin.com, which by they way, I am very thankful for. Granted, I have one student per quarter as an average who plagiarizes, but that is still too much. My strategy when I find that someone has cheated is to ask them to meet with me outside of class and in my office. There, I make sure that I have the essay in question and the websites already opened but not displayed. I tell the student that turnitin.com or I found a lot of similarities between their paper and a website or websites. This gives them the chance to confess. Most of the time they do in my experience. If they do confess, I try to find out why they did it and if I feel like the student deserves a second chance, I will give it to them. It's important to find out why, so I can address the situation logically and explain what alternatives they could have had. If they deny it at first (or never admit to it), I will not give second chances. And then I will present the evidence and let them know the school policy and follow those rules.
CHEATING SHOULD NOT BE TOLERATED IN ANY REALM OF EDUCATION OR IN THE WORKPLACE. STUDENTS SHOULD BE GIVEN APPROPRIATE AND ACCURATE INFORMATION IN A MANNER THAT IS EASILY UNDERSTOOD TO REMOVE THE FEELING THAT TO PASS, THEY HAVE TO CHEAT.
