CHEATING STUDENT

If I found a student cheating and I have no solid proof of it, I would privately speak to them very strongly about their behavior and give them a different test if I have one at hand. In order to minimize such occurrences, I would ask students to put their book bags at the back of the classroom before begining their test and retrieve them as they go out after the test.

Cheating is not fun, student cheat becasue they are not preapred for the exam or quize. When i was in college I made a quote without giving a credit to the author, the istructor did give a zero saying that was a cheating becasue i did not quote the author, I was very upset and yet had to retake the class. Cheating is very serious offense which we have to informe the student at the first meeting of the class if caught you will receive zero and no retake of it.

Hi Barbara,
Whenever I can my students must leave an empty seat between them, and the desk must be cleared of unneeded items at all times.

I've done the same with the bookbags. They know they are to have nothing on their desks other than the test, paper and pen/pencil.

I would not take any drastic action based on suspicion. What I would do is take the students out of the classroom and give them a verbal warning about what I felt suspicious about. I would then send them back to the classroom and assign them different seats for the remainder of the test.

Hi Chanda,
Your students really need to appreciate this warning. Normally when a student is suspected of cheating, the instructor will let them continue to cheat until they can prove it and then reprimand the students accordingly.

I suspected two students were teaching in my class. I separated them for the remainder of the cass and told them if I even thought they were cheating I would give them both zeros for the assignment and sent them to the director of the department.

I agree on day one of the class when I discuss class room expectations I inform my students that on exam/quiz time absolutely no cell phones, or additional material is allowed. Any violation will call into play a violation of ethical behavior. Most students will comply however a student may present to me “I have a family emergency at home.” I will allow the student to leave the phone on my desk and if a call comes in from the anticipated party I will allow them to answer at my desk using a low tone to resolve the matter. As technology advances so do the potential to cheat. Stay ahead in technology will give the instructor an advantage.

I agree. I plan on telling students if on a test day I see any cell phones at all on them they will receive a zero as well. They have gotten very clever with cheating via cell phones. You can actually see another students test using one in a completely different room!
