Cheating is not about the student who cheat is about the student who spend a lot of time to study in order to obtain a good grade. It is not fair to others to let student cheating. It is a lack of respect for the good student.
I agree Catherine that cheating is not about the student who cheats but about the student who does prepare for the test to get a good grade. It is really sad to think that students do sell themselves short when they cheat because they are not learing anything and at some point it will catch up with them and probably at a moment that could be very uncomfortable for them because of it. It shows no respect for the person who is being cheated off of and yes not fair for those who allow the cheating to take place in the first place.

I have found that most of the time, the instructor did a thorough job preparing the student for the test, and the student still decided to cheat. It is up to the student to be ethical or not.

I agree! Some students really like at it this way and get angry when they see others cheating and will tell on those who are cheating.

When a student feels the need to cheat, it is apparant they have not ever really been entrusted with anything in which they have feld has had value. Sometimes the effects of cheating are defussed by openly preparing for the exam with the class and giving students the opportunity to participate and the instructor the opportunity to call on the questionalble student. Hopefully, there is enough trust to enable the student to ask for help before the problem becomes too bit.
I agree. A student might study and prepare and only make a "C", while the student who cheats ends up with an "A".
I also feel that cheating students are ultimately hurting themselves. This is especially true of students that have to complete a form of post graduate examination, such as state board licensure testing. If you have cheated your way through school, how will you be prepared for the workforce or post graduate examinations?
