silent student
with a class size of 6, i have one student who remains silent. I've broken into groups of 2 with little luck.
My issue here is with a class of (9), as part of the career preparation, I have students read their essays aloud in class.
One Student, when it came to her turn, openly refused to do present her paper, and left.
She had read aloud in class before this with no problem, and thusly I was more than a little taken aback .
When I talked to her privately later on, she told me that on some days she "doesn't feel like particpating" .
What I did in response was to make a "contract" with her such that she would let me know in-advance on days such as this, and we would work out alternative activities.
Thoughts?
Hi Kristin,
Smaller groups work well for shy students. They tend to open up more in a smaller setting.

I have a class of 5 right now, and have one very quite student. I have broken them into smaller groups to allow them to voice their opinion. And it has seemed to worked.
Hi Mitchel,
Easy questions are a great way to boost self confidence so that the silent student opens up more.

I try asking them easy questions.
Hi LaTonya ,
Absolutely! Believe it or not, silent students can lead!

My suggestion is to have the silent student to take a charge role in group activites to show confidence/self motivation.
