cheaters
I usually make an announcement to the whole class and then pull the individual out a few days later to talk to them.
We have barriers that we made out of folders that the students put up around their tests so the student next to them cannot see their paper. Then we discovered they may have a hand tapping code to get answers from their friends! (Wow, I wonder who is smarter, them or us!!)
So now each time a test is given, the seating assignment for the day is changed.
Hi Brenda,
That's right! Deal with the cheating situation IMMEDIATELY!

I put this in bold letters in their syllibus. Academic Honesty Statement. It is covered fully with expectations and consequences. I explain to them that in the Medical Field it is very important not to cheat yourself out of an education, you may end up physically hurting someone(a patient) in the future. Most will understand and follow, i have only found a very few that really want to cheat, thank goodness!
I would not wait to pull the student aside. It is more effective to confront a problem as soon after the cheating occured as possible.
Hi Sheril,
I would also reprimand the student so that they know you are not going to tolerate this type of behavior.

I have not had to deal with a cheating student yet, and hopefully I won't any time soon. I believe my approach would include asking the student to step outside so that I could speak with the about the situation. I would remind teh student about the no-cheating policy as well as the consequences of said policy.
I usually tell my students that "cheating hurts". Its easy to do, but in the end (national certification/licensure test) it will be damaging and they will have wished they never did it. Becoming educated is not something people HAVE to do, its a choice. Its not about memorizing a bunch of words, its actually putting the effort into understanding those words, and once they're understood, they are memorized. Also, dreding putting effort into something is a lot harder than actually putting the effort in.
I have stood in the front of the class to tell everyone. I will be watching. this is College Level and there should be no cheating
