Zero tolerance for cheating

Stating in no uncertain terms that cheating in any form will not be tolerated should be made very clear in the syllabus. It should be the policy of the administration to back up the teacher in any confrontation resulting from a cheating accusation. This is especially important in professional schools where the lives of patients depend on the ability of the graduates of the program.

Hi Deanna,
No. They should be reprimanded according to your institution guidelines.

I think this is a great idea and a way to get them to acknowledge what happens when they cheat. To me cheating is just as bad a plagiarism and it is inexcusable. Do you think when a student is caught cheating they should be given a second chance?

I completely agree with you. I go a step further and include a signature sheet that highlights carious student policies, including honesty and cheating, and have all my students sign the form and return to me on the first day of class. It makes it very hard for them to claim they did not understand the consequences when I have a signed document that states they read and understood the policy.

Hi Kenneth,
I agree! Every educational institution should have a policy when it comes to cheating, and the repercussions should be clearly indicated in the policy.
