INstilling Pride
Instilling pride in each student and his or her sense of honour will mostly eliminate cheating. It has worked for a long at the Naval Academy.
Many of my students graduate "successfully" from secondary learning institutions where they were labeled "poor students with little chance of success". My challenge is to let the student discover the genius inside of them which has nothing to do with their past experience. By letting them know that if they attend class regularly and form a relationship with me, I can help them overcome their learning difficulties. If they choose to cheat, it is not me they are cheating, they are only fooling themselves and wasting their money. I tell them all the time that the real test of their success in this course is how they will feel when they are writing their tuition checks after graduation.
I have to agree with you. I make a great effort to get the student to find value in their aducation and to take pride in their work. I explain to them how anything worth having is going to take effort and hard work. Anyone can copy words from a page or neighbor, but what can you DO! There is nothing to gain from cheating.
