Yes, being prepared is such a great way to avoid mistakes. I also attempt to include appropriate articles that can help to validate the objective of the class period. Having prepared myself can also add to my own knowledge and expertise as the instructor. It's the number 1 tool in the classroom!
Hi Stacey,
We all make mistakes. The key is learning from your mistakes. As suggested, write down your mistakes, it is amazing how effective this process is. It really works.
Patricia
Class preparation is key! If you are prepared for class there is a smaller chance that you will make mistakes. I liked how the course talked about making notes when you make a mistake so you can learn from them for the next class.
Hi Isaac,
It sounds like you are very organized! As educators, we must develop systems that will make our lives easier. Teaching is a big handful.
Patricia
prep time before class and also reevaulating what you taught them that day at the end of the day. I keep a journal of what I need to do next time to make life a little easier in teaching. Also, I try to add to my lectures. When I add to them, I try to make sure the content will HELP the students.
Hi Steven,
I've never heard of the Six P's. The phrase does make sense. Preparation is key.
Patricia
THE SIX "P's"....
PROPER PLANNING PREVENTS PISS POOR PERFORMANCE
Hi Luis,
Educator mistakes are great teachable moments. It lets the students know that we are human too.
Patricia
I always come to class as prepared as possible. In the event that I make a mistake during demo, which happens from time to time, I create a teachable moment and show the students how to correct the mistake if it should happen to them.
Hi Mathias,
Preparation is certainly key. Students can tell quickly when you are unprepared. A super mixture is being prepared and incorporating humor.
Patricia
The best way to prepare for mistakes is to be over prepared, and have a scene of humor.
Hi Margaret,
Wow, you are appear to be extremely organized! Preparation is key. Keep preparing; you can never go wrong with great preparation.
Patricia
For me it is all about the preparation. I am a person who needs to write notes, so I log where we stopped each class, what is due next class etc. Now I look at my notes before the class starts and I am acclamated.
I send emails to each class after class ends telling them what we did that day, homework and reminders. I get a copy of that email which also helps.
Hi Darryl,
I chuckled when I read your response. I had a techer that every time she taught a new course, she would do a "play by play." She said it made her more comfortable when she actually had to lecture to her students.
Patricia
I agree with the prep work and organization before class. Calming myself before class and getting the mindset. Sometimes I like to do what lots of athletes do for competition is actually do the actual "play by play" in your mind before actual game time. As in teaching, I like to do this exercise by actually viewing myself teaching before I actually teach - sometimes during an hour before class or even a day before. It helps reduce anxiety and keeps me calm which helps to reduce common mistakes.
Hi David,
It sounds like you are really prepared for your lectures. Keep up the good work! It is better to have too much information than to not have enough information.
Patricia
Hello Leonard,
Your saying is so true. If you are prepared you will sweat very little, if any at all.
Patricia
Being over-prepared makes for a more relaxed start. If I walk into a classroom with a solid class outline and a couple of sidebar lectures, activities and projects I can be more dynamic in classroom. The class feels more alive and the students engage more if they feel you are speaking directly to their needs and questions. The only way to do this is to be prepared.
I like tell my students, "All success is preparation and perspiration, the more preparation; the less perspiration."
Being prepared and being on top of what you are teaching. I am a new instructor in a intro to culinary arts and I spend a lot of time prepairing that I do not get to all the infomation I have gathered during lecture. I want to share all my knowledge with my students so that they can get everything from my class.
Hi Jennifer,
You sound like you've learned some things. You are on point! Keep up the good work!
Patricia
