Remembering the students names is important to show them they are important and a part of the class. I have a hard time remembering names of 30 students the first day so I take role three times on the first day after each bell ringing.
Also having assigned seats is a must for me.
Then 3 weeks later, I have to memorize 30 new names.

Hi Jose,

Hello Argelia,
How good are you at remembering your students names? I make it a point to remember ALL of my students names on the first day of class, regardless of the class size.
Patricia

Remembering student names comes easy for me because I assign seating.

DEFINATELY TRUE. WHEN AN INSTRUCTOR REMEMBERS EACH INDIVIDUAL STUDENT BY HIS/HER NAME THE STUDENTS MAKES CONNECTION THAT HE/SHE IS VALUED AND RESPECTED BY THE INSTRUCTOR. THE STUDENTS KNOWS THAT THERE IS A CONNECTION SOMEHOW AND MUST BE KEPT FOR THE SURVIVIAL OF THE COURSE....

Remembering student names comes easy for me because I conduct daily attendance by calling out and connecting the students name to his or her face.

I am very bad at remembering names especially with 3 classes having a todal of 80 students. So I explain this to them, ask them to help me out by sitting in the same seat. I will then make out a seating chart as a tool to help me.

It is so important to remember and call on them by name, respect is almost instsntly granted. I like to use different activities to learn each name. Sometimes I use the clean up sheet and drawing job tasks as a tool for me to learn there names.

Remembering the students names shows you have respect for the students. If they believe you respect them then they will respect you.

Remembering names is very important. It shows you relate to the students on a personal level, which they seem to appreciate.

Hello Christopher,
Students look at you in a different light whenever you refer to them by their name. Students feel important whenever instructors know their name. Students tend to be a lot easier to handle by knowing their name. You're right, you must know when to hammer down on students.

i agree. using there names and treating them like an adault or friend helps a lot. i get more improvements out of my students with this method. but you must also know when to put the foot down too.

Hi Michael,
I am extremely good at remembering my student names. I make it a point to memorize all of my student names on the first day, it doesn't matter how big or small the class is. It impresses my students to no end by knowing their names on the first day. Memorizing their names on the first day is the first tactic I use to build a rapport with them. I had a student that walked into my class today after ten years, and I was able to say hello Tara, and it made her feel so good that I remembered her.

Continue to use the technique that you do to help you remember your student names. Knowing their names really does matter.

I could not agree more. the very first day I put all of the students names on index cards as ask them to stay in the seats they have chosen for the first few days. I use these cards to pick students for random questions during the lecture as well as a constant way to test myself with there names.
