Instructor Experience
I have come to know that it is better to be a teaching professional than a professional teacher when it comes to technical courses. Students tend to respect the experience factor.
Hi Sandra,
Students love it whenever instructors share their experiences and stories; students are really motivated by these.
Patricia
I agree. I allow my prior real world experience to blend to the curriculum, illustrating how the textbook learning and applications, apply in the working healthcare setting.
Subject Matter, Very important, In our institution we need to know the information taught prior to the student reaching our Phase which requires a great deal of time, however, what do you do when your school frones on OT or using personnal time to better yourself. I find being ready and prepared for you subject is critical, So why should you be limited by your school?????
When I decided to become an Instructor almost four years ago, I felt that I could contribute to the community with my experiences on hand. But soon after, I realized that experience is only one factor in education. I think that you need a clear source of direction, dedication to the cause, and a lot of trial and error. Each day is different and produces different challenges in the classroom. Now after almost four years of being an Instructor, I now feel worthy to be among those who have a lifetime of experience in the classroom. Watching my classes learn and become respected health care professionals is truly the best experience for myself and my students. In closing, "Experience" is the best reward.
Hi Paul,
As long as the personal information applies to the class lesson that is perfectly fine. Students like hearing about our experiences.
Patricia
I agree, Troy. I introduce myself on the first day with a little about my experience and then as the class progresses I add little bits of personal experience info to add to a topic that we are discussing. I find that the students interest level is increased when you can give them real life scenarios that pertain to the subject.
Hi Shaista,
You are right! It is of the utmost importance to make sure you know the subject matter. You lose all credibility whenever you don't know the subject matter.
Patricia
I do agree that having experience is a edge over the new instrutor but knowing your subject is what matters. If you are experience & not going by the book you will still lose the respect of your students. As a new instructor i would know each & everything about my topic & if i had a question which i had no answer for i will gladly admit that i dont know it & will look it up.
Hello Summer,
Wow, I never utilize this type behavior and nor do I allow my instructors to do so. We are suppose to be our students biggest CHEERLEADERS!
Patricia
I agree experience is key. Yet, TEACHER is the word above all else. This has been an interesting debate I have had with other instructors. While we are teaching students how to perform in their industry, we are not their bosses or supervisors. As a teacher, your goal is one of understanding and motivation. I have heard instructors justify yelling and demeaning behavior in the kitchen classroom, since this is how supervisors in thier industry might treat them. This is not the behavior of a teacher, or a professional.
Hi Troy,
Nicely said! I am a firm believer, experience is the best teacher!
