Have you ever handled a situation with a student that was not in a private setting, and the situation escalated? If so, may be a private setting would have been the trick.

I agree. In private is a good opportunity to gain even more respect.
This is a very good thing to have done. It allowed the student to have that "one on one" and to be explained that this is not the "end of their academic world".

I don't believe in putting a student on blast. The best way to handle students is in a private setting.

That is the best way to do it.If you signal out someone in class thay may shut down and you will never get them back.
