Hi Hayvelises,
Awesome way to track what works and does not work. This is a good way to reference how you want to make changes to the class as well.

Patricia Scales

To avoid common instructor mistakes you need to come to class prepared. It is also wise to have a mentor that will help you through the challenges that my occur.

Well in my experience, I always keep a personal notebook in where I write and outlined for the class that I teach at the moment..that helps me not over come the same mistakes and error...also keps me on track for improved of tecniques development

I have only been teaching for about six months, but I have learned a lot in that time. I have figured out that organization is very important. I have also learned that I, too, will never feel like a "pro" at teaching--I don't think anyone should. I don't want to get complacent.

I feel like speaking with other instructors and getting their ideas, opinions, and structures has helped me limit my mistakes as a new instuctor.

Hi Jessica,
It is good to evaluate yourself. Continue to do those things that worked, and make changes to things that did not work.

Patricia Scales

yes! I tell my students the one thing that is constant is change! That goes for me as an instructor too. I love learning and I try to convey that same enthusiasm to my students.

Learn from the previous lesson. Not from the content, but how it was delivered. If your students are grasping the concept of what you are teaching, the way you are teaching it, there should be a change in delivery. I thought it was a great idea to sit down for ten-15 minutes after a class session and figure out what worked and what didn't. This was you the instructor are more apt to change a technique or not.

Hi Bruce,
You are fortunate to have someone with years of many experience to guide you. I am the DOE at my institution, and my instructors tell me all the time how fortunate the are to be uder my leadership because I can help them with almost anything.

Patricia Scales

Hi Shawnte,
What a great way to gain professional growth. I can tell you take your career seriously.

Patricia Scales

As a new instructor, I know I will make some mistakes, but I have been lucky to have a program director with many years of teaching experience. I can discuss strategy and what to expect. I am also able to discuss scenarios from class and how I reacted to the situation. It gives me piece of mind that I am doing the right thing and if not, use other strategies from someone else's experience.

I take an Instructor development coarse to keep me updated with my field. It helps me to make less mistakes.

Being prepared and knowing your presented subject each time helps.

Patricia,

And we learn every time we get into the classroom, especially if we reflect afterwards about what went well, and what could be improved upon.

Hi Michelle,
Absolutely! We live in a world that is constantly changing, and in order to keep up, we must change.

Patricia Scales

I think of myself as a life long learner. I try to instill the same values in my students. Things are constantly changing and we need to keep up. Keeping and making notes of the new changes on your old lesson plans will help you when you teach that lesson again.

Be prepared and organized for your class. Have confidence in your experience in the field you are teaching.

One of my instructors once told me that preparation is the best way to lessen anxiety. It won't eliminate it but being totally prepared lesson wise will get you through. We have to learn to do the right thing poorly before you can ever excell.

Hi AnnaMarie,
I have been teaching for over 23 years, and I always make it a point to become even better. I preach to my students, I do not care how good you are, you can become better...I try to live by this as well.

Patricia Scales

I agree Shawn. It can be difficult to remember that we should be continuously striving for improvements especially when there may be an assigned cuirriclum that can get very repetitive. Its easy to fall into the same routines if things are ok. Classes being ok is good, but classes can always be great as well!
