Silent Students

I feel that the small work groups are a good idea, but I have a silent student, and with working in the small groups, the student still doesn't speak much at all. The only way to have this type of student to involve themselves is to, have a one-on-one meeting/group discussion.

Yeah, I have a similar issues with students of mine.

Hi Catherine,
I hear you! You simply would bend over backwards for this student. You understand the challenges this young lady faces. Thank you for being caring and compassionate! Continue to do all you can for her and all of your students.

I have one student who is very quiet at times. I know some about her background and home life, and I understand that she has a "lot going on." I have let her know that I am there if she has anything I can help her with and that the school is there for her also, if there is anything we can, as a team, do to assist her in achieving her "dream." She is a great student; works really hard and does well in school, even though she is absent quite often because of things going on in other parts of her life. I think, for her, this is the most I can accomplish: To let her know she can come to me with anything and we all, the other instructors and the school and I, all want her to succeed.

Hi Karen,
Some students just will not open up. Once you learn what works for that student to open up, use it to the student's advantage.
