Common instructor mistakes

Not keeping the classroom environment professional is a common error. I've had students test the water by using profanity in the
classroom, I address it quickly, by saying we must keep the classroom rated " PG" at all times.

Sometime some medical terminology sounds dirty and will get laughs. I use this as an oppertunity to discuss professional behavior. In front of client you will have to refrain from laughing.

I like this idea of a rubric addressing professionalism. Oftentimes, we have students show up in clothing that would be considered inappropriate for the workplace. Teaching the importance of these soft skills would be invaluable.

Professionalism in the classroom environment can be challenging at times (especially in very large or very small classes). To ensure everyone remains on track I provide a professionalism rubric at the beginning of the class. The rubric sets the expectations and consequences for unprofessional behavior. After trying different methods, this seems to work the best (so far).

Hi Ceola,
I nip the unprofessionalism by students in the bud quickly as well. I like your saying. I normally tell them I do not use profanity, therefore I better not hear anyone in the class using it.
