New instructors

There is nothing so nerve-racking as the first day of teaching! Also, there is nothing more true than the benefit of experience. I particularly like the discussion on being a teacher who is well liked or one who is respected. It is a fine line, but most teachers need to realize the respect part is superior!

Hi Susan,
The more you do it...the more comfortable you will become. Eperience really is the best teacher.
Patricia

Respect of students is significantly more important then whether they like us. And I believe no matter how long we teach each new class -- the first day is always cause for nervousness.

I also tell my students that, but I make sure they know how much I learn from them too! I have learned so much and because I tell them from the beginning that I may not have all the answers, but will always try to get them, I gain respect from them

Hi Jeff,
The more you teach, the more comfortable you will become! Just remember to always be prepared, knowledgeable and confident and the butterflies will decrease.
Patricia

I remember my first day as an instructor, I was so nervous. It took me about six months to finally start to feel comfortable. Every now and then I will still get 'butterflies" before starting a new class. I think it is good though, it keeps me on my toes.

I agree with this statement. I just taught my first course in a field I have 10 years experience. Although it felt wonderful, I still have so much to learn. Already I know things will change next class, not drastically, but definitely. I have grown!

Hi Laura,
An instructor does become better with time. Experience is the best teacher. An instructor never teaches a subject the same way twice because each time the subject is taught you become that much more effective.
Patricia

I agree with you Ann. One approach I use as a new instructor is to let the students know that I once was in their shoes, and with hard work and much practice comes expertise. I am here teaching you today because I wanted to give back to my profession.

Hi Ann,
The respect part far out weighs the well liked part. As educators, we must realize we are not in it to win a popularity contest. It is great if they like you, but if not, oh well...
Patricia
