Repeat students

How can an instructor avoid developing a "friendship" (I mean friendly rapport, nothing more) with a student if they have had the student in 4 or more classes? Occasionally I have students for a few classes in a row; they begin to tell me spouse problems, children problems, how can I avoid this?

Hi Attila,
Great response! Help as much as possible, but do not get personal with the students, and please provide as much assistance as possible.
Patricia

Being friendly is not the same as being friends.

Just try to keep a professional distance when interacting with the student. Listen to their problems, be polite, recommend seeking expert counselling when appropriate.

Avoid offering your opinion, advice or recommendations on personal matters. Avoid providing assistance above and beyond what you would provide the rest of the class.
