Hi Sharlen,
Great way to get students as well as yourself to remember the names of others. Students feel a sense of importance when they are remembered by their name.

I, too, like to use table tents for their names and also use an icebreaker where the students have to name a food that begins with the same letter as their first name and then everyone has to repeat the name and the food. I told them that one part of their final exam would be to remember everyone’s name. When we did it, they said during the quarter, they thought of that person with the name of the food.

Hi David,
I use name tents in my classroom. Sometimes the students will lose their tents, but by that time, I know their names. Also, remedy to students losing the name tent is that I keep them in my plastic box I use for transporting my classroom supplies and pass the name tents out each day until I don't need them anymore.

Hi Jennifer,
It is important to remember student names. Students feel a sense of importance when you know their name.

I find I learn the names faster and more easily if I work on learning the student's whole name, rather than just the last name, as is common at our school. Its a lot easier to associate a face with a first name, rather than a last name.
I think it is great that you are letting them know you will remember them. I use my ice breaker as a name recognition game. I then refer to the game often in the first few classes. I also take notes of the game/student's name and it helps everytime.
I try to remember funny sayings (in my head) for their names....it is easier for me to remember.
Hi David,
You may want to try using name tents or assigned seats to help with memorizing names. At least your students understand to charge it to your head and not your heart.
