Having your supervisor as a student
I will have my superivisor as a student in my Phlebotomy class next semester. We are friends and I know I have to seperate my personal relationship with her for the class. I know I can do this on a professional level but I am open to any suggestions that will help me with my upcomming semester.
I have had this happen, & it can make you nervous! What I have found is that it helps if you sit down with the person first, several days to a week before the class is to begin, & in a pleasant, non-bossy manner ask them 1st what they will expect from you, as an instructor. Then see if this "matches" with what you are able to provide, ie that she will be treated like everyone else. This may break the ice with this person so that you both are clear about what will or won't happen in the class. If your supervisor/friend does not have the same expectations as you, I would suggest then explaining gently why you cannot favor her, refer to your friendship, professional standing, etc. in class, while at the same time letting her know now how valuable she is to you...but, you cannot allow any feeling that she is "teacher's pet". I feel it would be best not to refer to your professional relationship at all in the class, but that depends on you.
This is a potentially uncomfortable situation, but I am sure that you will pull it off with grace and charm! Susan
I would not treat her any differently. You cannot assume anything and you must afford her the same expectations as any other student!
