common instructor mistakes

as instructors it is important to be organized and look professional. We must practice what we teach or we are not true teachers.

Hi Lolita,
I concur! The instructor should begin teaching on the hour! Students will take your lead if you begin on time. They will know that they must get to class on time.
Patricia

Hi Lynn,
We should lead by example. How in the world you expect your students to get to class on time, and you are the role model and you do not even get to class on time...not fair! Lead by example.
Patricia

Students hate it when instuctors don't show up on time - and especially when the students can get in trouble for tardiness. It's a double standard. Instructors don't get in trouble. However, students may give a course evaluation that points up these kinds of problems.

Also, an instructor should be sure that the student will see benefit in being on time. We shouldn't waste those opening minutes by setting up the classroom or arranging technology. Be sure you are ready to start right in with learning activities.

Hi Lynn,
There are students at every institution that are known to have attendance problems. We must continue to lead by example, and exemplify the importance of attendance.
Patricia

At our school, we have certain students who have trouble with attendance. One solid way to lead by example is to always show up on time and take attendance right away. If I have personal appointments in the day, I schedule them for days or times that don't affect classroom time.

Hi April,
Absolutely! You must practice what you preach.
Patricia

Very true! I walk into the lab everyday following the same rules I expect my students to follow. The easiest way to lead is by example.
