Assigned seating for name recognition
At the start of every course. I do assigned seating. I create a grid that corresponds to the classroom and write the students name in the box. That way, I can call everyone by their name and have a good way to put a face with the name.

Great idea! I also know that there are some instructors that will use name tents for the first few weeks to help them memorize their student names.

I let students sit where they want at the first class. They sign a seating grid. Then I make another grid with their photo. It helps me learn the name and face much quicker.
Do adults in class take well to this? I personally would not like to be told where to sit or by whom to sit in class (unless it was an assigned group activity).
