Professionalism

I think that professionalism can be very subjective in our society and those of us in the career colleges need to understand the culture that each student will be entering into before laying out blanket dress code or behavior etc.

I agree with Bridget: we as instructors have the experience in the field and also the knowledge of the culture students will be entering. As an oral com instructor, I understand what kind of professional communication my students need to succeed in their fields and in the culture. They need to be good listeners, have thinking skills, be able to organize their thoughts, and communicate those thoughts. In any career field/culture, these skills are critical for them to succeed.

Hi Linda,
I feel as though students should be corrected whenever they speak incorrectly. I encourage making students' grammar better.

How can you as an instructor or is not appropriate to coach students on their grammar? I personally believe that we are judged on our communication skills as well as the skills being taught in the course. Some students come to class with no foundation of grammatically correct spoken English and I cringe when I listen to them. Perhaps it is a personal issue since I learned grammar in my home growing up and was corrected frequently until I got it correct. Please advise.

Hi Martha,
Super response! You're right professionalism is they same whether you go to Harvard or a career college such as ours. Our students really do look up to us to emulate as professionals.

Hi Bridget,
Experience aand knowledge are definitely pluses, but we have to look and act the part of a professional.

Hi Deb,
First and foremost, we must exemplify professionalism.

Hello

In career colleges I believe the instructors are coming in with their experience and knowledge of the culture: The culture the students are going to work in and are currently living in. With that instructors two-way knowledge it is important to set and maintain a professional standard with dress code, behavior etc., that will enhance that students opportunities of setting higher goals in their profession.

I believe the students need to learn from us on how important it is to be professional. Many students may not be familiar on how people in general should act/behave, dress, talk and walk in a professional setting. It is up to us to provide some important tools in acting, dressing, talking, behaving and walking in a professional setting. It does not matter if the student is attending an Ivy League, State, Vocational or Career College -the rule of professionalism is still the same. They should be aware of the rule of thumb when they are interviewing and preparing to enter the workforce. First impressions are forever lasting. It is important for students to realize the importance wearing their uniform, suit and tie, slacks, smocks, or scrubs-what ever it is they must feel proud to wear it and follow the dress rules of each college or employment.
