Practice makes perfect

I must confess that I have practiced lectures before. I have done it to both serve as an education tool for me but also so that I can time the material that I am presenting. This can help out make sure that I am not cramming too much in the last 10 minutes of class!

Hi Kathleen,
As instructors we want to always lecture thoroughly so that all questions are covered in the lecture.

I do neither, but I do review my lectures making sure that I can answer the questions that I think my students will ask.

I have practiced using a timer while standing in front of a mirror with the aid of a tape recorder. The recorder allows me to understand inflection, articulation and has shown me that when I feel hurried or nervous I can speak too quickly and I start speaking in monotone. If I deliver a lecture in a fast and boring tone, I noticed many of the students start slumping, stop focusing and stop taking notes.

Hi Hank,
Years ago when I practiced, I would use a mirror. I've known some instructors to even practice in front of their mentor or a seasoned instructor. A mentor or seasoned instructor can give you great constructive feedback.

I should try a practice lecture, do you practice in front of a mirror or just use a timer?
