not following through with what you have said

Structure and consistency have always been important in my classrooms. I learned long time ago that if I do not follow through with everything that I have said, i.e. "quiz tomorrow," the results have been horrid.

Hi Leigh,
We must show our students how to accept responsibility for their actions, but confessing to our short comings/mishaps.
Patricia

credibility is easily lost and virtually impossible to get back if you are consistently not following through, however things happen. as long as misteps are the exception and not the rule. I have found that when i take responsibility for my mistakes students appreciate integrity and they see how to appropriately handle their mistakes in the future

HI Patricia, I find that it helps to announce changes in daily/weekly lesson plans right at the beginning of class. Sometimes a printed revised weekly schedule is helpful too. Jill

Hi Hiliana,
Students need structure, otherwise things will be very chaotic. Students really want an evironment that will allow learning to take place.
Patricia

consistency is probably the most important factor in managing a class.
Setting expectations and protocols and follow them will give the class some systematic approach the most students need to stay focus.

Hi Donna,
Yes. We are the role models. Standards must be met by both parties.

If you don't follow through with what you tell the students then they feel that they don't have to follow through either. We lead by example. Set the bar high for both instructors and students.

I have seen the same result. Students want to know what to expect and they expect us as instructors to uphold to what we say; as we expect them to uphold to the syllabus, the classroom and college rules, and the due dates of the assigned work.

If we can't uphold to our guidelines, they won't know the importance of upholding to their obligations.

Hi Mark,
As an instructor, you must do what you say you are going to do, otherwise you lose a lot of credibility. Students begin to take you as a joke . . .
