reducing instructor anxiety

I always emphasize to the students that they, too, are responsible for creating an effective, relaxed, productive learning atmosphere. When I do feel anxiety, it seems to stem from taken entire responsibility for the classroom atmosphere.

Hi Paul,
You would think as one becomes older and more mature that in their adulthood they want to strive for excellence and not just have a piece of paper (diploma).
Patricia

Some adults aren't really adults when it comes to taking responsibility for learning. Some have been shown through years of experience that all it takes is a piece of paper (a diploma) to get ahead. They figure if they put in the time and use the minimum amount of energy they can be as successful as someone who excells in class. The real world has to put a different emphasis on excellance if we are going to see a difference in adult expectations.

Hi Cynthia,
You are right! I stress to my students anything worth having is worth working for. No pain, no gain. No one is going to give you anything.
Patricia

Especially adult learners. Many have struggled for minimum wages and want more but do not want to work for it. They want it given to them.

Hi Gavin,
I have been baffled by this for over 21 years. Why in the world you do not give it your all in all to be successful within your school years? I always wanted to be regarded as an exemplary student, therefore I worked hard, and I did exceptionally well.
Patricia

This is something that is very clearly defined and controlled where I teach. I often find myself dismayed that adults need to be wrangled in order to have the desired outcome occur. It is difficult for me to understand why anyone would want to waste their time, money and effort by not having the self control to accomplish the goal.

Hi Hayley,
Students must contribute to this evironment that is to be conducive for learning, but we have to be the captain to ensure this is happening, and if it is not, we must make it happen.
