instructors mistakes
They are not prepared and get worried about it, it is always wise to be prepared about what to do for that class. Another is respected of a student, the best thing is to make sure that the student knows who is boss and that it is ok to be relaxed and not teminated, its ok to joke but when its time to do buisness they need to do the proper instructions that are give, do not get into the "quick sand" and become their friend.
Patricia,
I think that probably we all agree to stay away from friendships with students.
The instructor/student boundary needs to be set firmly upfront.
Otherwise, as you mentioned, it is too difficult to get out of the "quick sand."
You almost are at the point of no return.

Bryan,
I agree with you that you absolutely must be prepared for the class.
Otherwise, you will look like an "amateur" in front of your students and really will not be offering a quality class.
I also agree with you that once you step into the "quick sand" and become a friend, then you almost cannot get out of the "quick sand."
I am a strong believer in establishing a firm instructor/student boundary upfront.
Otherwise, as you said, there is no turning back once you have become a friend.
Also, if you become a friend, then you really cannot evaluate your students fairly and are doing the class a disservice, as a whole.

Hi Bryan,
The quick sand can definitely get you in big trouble. It will certainly cause you to sink quickly.
