Professional Image
As a new instructor, I find it very difficult keeping my professional image, especially as I catch myself making mistakes that I later need to fix. How do I correct myself to the students without losing my professional image?
Hi Earline,
No one knows it all. As you have stated, find the answer as soon as possible and share the response with the class.
Patricia
Juan I totally agree as an Instructor must know
the material. You are also human, and humans make
mistakes. If I don't know the answer I tell them but I let them know that I will find out before the class ends.
Hi Kevin,
I have met instructors from both worlds. I have met those who really have a natural knack for teaching, and I have encountered those who have worked really hard to learn the profession. Both sets make ideal instructors because with hard work you can accomplish anything you put your mind to and when teaching comes natural, it is just simply there and you sparkle as an educator.
Patricia
Unfortunately, many of the skills required to be a “great†instructor combine natural ability and learned ability. As previously mentioned, organization is fundamental skills set. With time, a new instructor will become more relaxed and will develop their unique “styleâ€. They may be demonstrative in their methods or more reserved. The elements are the same, however. Knowledge, preparation, care, management skills, etc. are tasks the position requires. I have learned that all in a day one student may think you are the best teacher they have ever met and are a saint, while an hour later told you’re the devil. We can only do our best and learn from mistakes, what others have done right, and the changes within a campus climate.
Hi Quinn,
I agree with your thoughts. The more you teach, the better you will become. The extra time that is not needed to prepare can be used for ways to have creative teaching.
Patricia
I beleieve knowing your information and being organized is key. Having a game plan on what you are going to do always keep you on track and students lik ethe fact they are accomplishing things withi the class. As you become more familiar with the information the more creative you can be with your class. That's what I think.
Hi Xan,
Organization is key! Anytime anyone (including students) gives you constructive feedback, reevaluate yourself and make the needed adjustments. I am excited to know that you are working on your delivery, something that was pointed out by your students.
Patricia
As a new instructor, it has taken me a while to work on my delivery. Some students think that I am harsh. So I have been trying to work on that. I also find that i have to be very organized.
Be prepared for your class, know the material cold and admit any mistakes to the students or you will definitely lose your credibility
