New Instructor

Each school should have a mentoring program for new instructors.

A mentoring progam is so important for new instructors. I think this would really minimize the mistakes that a new instructor might make. Students like to know that you are confident and having someone help you with those things that helps you appear more confident, establishes a good reputation right from the start.

Hi Marlene,
Continue to work hard in order to shine as a great instructor. I can understand the toughness of what you had to go through, but you did it. Preparation is key, and if you are unable to shadow an instructor, get with a seasoned instructor so that you ca pick their brain, and they can teach you the trick of the trade.
Patricia

I agree. I was not mentored nor did I shadow an Instructor prior to teaching my first class. I was terrified to say the least. I was also not familiar with the course content. Thankfully I had a good class who did not make it difficult or challenging. I am now more confident in the classroom and I have a routine and very proficient in the course content. This took alot of time and effort on my part, utlizing teaching skills I am comfortable with. I followed an agenda for the first class so that I would cover what I needed and not forget about what to do next. Teaching in general education can be challenging because years in the field does not credit you when teaching a class like Career Development. Therefore being prepared and also being flexibile is important. My credibility is very important to both myself and my students. They need to be sure that their money is not being wasted and I need to provide a quality education to each student.

Hi Debra,
Team teaching is awesome. You can really pick up on some great pointers. Since you did not get this opportunity, get with a seasoned instructor an pick their brain.
Patricia

I would of love to have been able to shadow someone teaching my class just to get ideas on presentation and flow .

Hi Diane,
I love my new instructor to team teach/observe a seasoned instructor so that they feel more prepared when they have to teach the subject matter on their on.
Patricia

I believe in the case where the new instructor has no prior class room experience it is nice to offer a shadowing program so that a sense of familiarity can be established, expectations, possible scenarios as well as strategy can be observed.

I agree; therefore the teachers know what is expected of them and the teachers know how to do things and they are not out there like a fish out of water.
