I address the "Now I wonder who THIS guy is?" student pre-conceptions of the instructor in several ways. One way is to demonstrate practical--and recent, if possible--professional applications of my experiences and/or skills in the *real* world. The second way to present an on-going image is to use humor, and self-deprecation when applicable.
Hi Billie,
Great way to show the importance of English, regardless of your major. Communication is key!
Patricia
I teach English so getting all students to buy in to the idea that they need an English class when they are medical students or accounting students can be difficult. I try to let them know that everyone needs to be able to write a good note, paragraph, or letter. I use examples and ask them for examples in work situations where someone gave instructions--orally or written--that the reciever did not understand. They soon learn that being clear and concise is a much needed trait in any job.
I approach these situations the same way you do. I share my experiences, some good and some bad. I pride myself on honesty and I guarantee the students that they will receive nothing but honest information. I make them feel like I am on "their team" and I am there for them to succeed, not to go against them. Oh yeah, definitely lots of humor works too.
Thanks,
Joy
Hi Nicole,
Students get a great sense of satisfaction when they understand how the course applies to the real world.
Patricia
I also use this approach. I think it helps the student feel like they know what will happen after they graduate. It helps them understand how the course material directly relates to the work field.
Hi Mark,
I like how you make known of your experiences and skills from the real world. Students like to know that they are learning from an extremely knowledgeable experienced professional.
