Professionalism

Instructors need to put the best effort forth on the first class meeting, lead by example and students will follow. Start the class off by introduction and asking each student to introduce themsleves.
Expain the school policy and describe any special rules you will require from the students during the class. Show students the ways to improve their grades and participate better in class.
Tell students about ATTITUDE !!!!
Everyone has personel problems and when you come to class, leave your problems at the door, you will be able to collect them afterwards.
Start everyday with a fresh attitude and you will see better learning and life.
Now I have your attention lets proceed with the learning objectives for today.

Thanks, Patricia. Your encouragement gave me a great boost! So - what college are you associated with? (Just curious. I'm very grounded here in Grand Junction, CO.)
I do hope to help change lives, though, as you suggest. I'm betting you do a LOT of that! That is the best there is! - Ruth

Hi Ruth,
Wow, I want you on my faculty! I like your whole outlook. You are a carbon copy of me! I can tell you are one of the best. Keep changing lives, you are an AWESOME role model for your students.
Patricia

Patricia,
To start with, I always dress professionally, show up at least 20 minutes before class begins, start and end class right on time, and treat everyone with courtesy and respect. I speak and write with a professional tone, follow through with what I say I will do, and am prepared for every class. I give them examples of various teaching points from the "real-world", including some of both my positive and negative work experiences. Even if their behavior drops below an acceptable standard of professionalism, I keep mine on a higher level, addressing them assertively and politely. I make every effort to keep my "walk" matching my "talk".

Hi Ruth,
What do you generally do to display professionalism to your students?
Patricia

Thanks for the great line! I will use it.

Hi Ruth,
I concur! I tell my students all the time, the classroom is the place where you can make errors and learn from them so that when you enter the workplace you won't make these mistakes.
Patricia

Your comments about the importance of having a positive attitude are important and helpful to students as students, and also applies directly to the workplace. Additionally, it could be pointed out that "What you do in practice is what you do in the game." The classroom is both a place of learning and a place to practice the kind of professional attitudes and behaviors that will carry one forward in any chosen career field.

Hi Ellen,
You grabbed my attention with your response! I am sure you get your students to focus in on you by giving them this excellent speil on Day 1.
