I concur! We can certainly empathize as well as sympathize with our students. Most of our students have a lot of drama going on in their lives, and at times they really need somone to talk to.

I agree that we should not discuss our own problems with a student to "one up them" , however we still want ot show empathy for those students that we can see are going through their own trying times

That's right! The students have enough problem of their own. We do not need to burden them with our personal problems, and furthermore it is unprofessional to discuss your personal problems with students.
