Hi Michael,
Great icebreaker. It is important to get to know your students and for your students to get to know each other.
Patricia

I start out the first day of class, I tell them what I respect and I tell them a little bit about my credentials and how long I have been in the field. I then go around and have everyone stand and tell the class a little bit about themsrlves and their names. This lets me know a little bit about each student.

The first day of class, I always introduce myself and give a background to the students. My background includes everything I have done thats gives me the wright to be standing infront of them teaching. I remind them that I have @30 years experience in the field. Then I let them know that i am going to give them as much of that experience in the 20 days they are with me. Of course in a condensed version. I let them know that they need to know the basics before doing anything else....Then I have them give me a little background about themselves (really a way for me to see where they are coming from and for me to know where to start.

Hi Larry,
I concur. "Hey girlfriend" does not portray the image of professionlism. Students should at least be addressed by their first name.
Patricia

Some of the things I try to put forward from the first day of class include a sincere interest and warmth towards each individual, as well as a passion for my subject (English composition). I give a brief history of my experiences as both a writer and a teacher to demonstrate my qualifications. And since sense of humor is one of my favorite characteristics in any person, I try to get some humor into my lectures. I think that most people enjoy the opportunity to lighten up and laugh a little (my Yiddish word of the day often gives us that opportunity).

Most of us are using our visual sense to evaluate one another especially before meeting another. So I think dressing professionaly is extremely important. This includes trimmed and cleaned nails and groomed hair. In addition, correcting things like halitosis and eminating body odors can be quite offensive.
I overheard one of my instructors a few terms back greet a student with, "hey girlfriend." I think this is inappropriate to friendly of a greeting style. Addressing the student by first name or Mr., Mrs., or Ms., plus the surname is the best way to go.

Hi Nancy,
These things will certainly make you have a reputable reputation. Students talk about the good and bad.
Patricia

Hi Kurt,
Super ways to create a first positive impression. You grabbed my attention based on your response. I am sure these practices attract your students.
Patricia

Hi Sundi,
On the first day, I like to wear a very professional business suit. Students tend to give you even more respect when you look the part. Image says a lot.
Patricia

I try to promote a positive image from the very first meeting. In my institution, students have to take a placement test in which myself and the other English instructor proctor. THis is the first time I meet with the students so I try to be compassionate and warm and I also offer a question and answer period to help assuage any growing fears.

Hi Cicely,
Continue to be a great role model. Our students need more professionals like you.
Patricia

I try to create a positive image by dressing appropriately. Our clientele(technical school) really needs to see instructors that are serious about their profession and serious about their learners. I establish those characteristics from the start. I show them that I am not there to be their friend, but I am there to help them attain some of their desired goals.

I really agree with Nancy. On the first day I always make sure to be early to class, dress professionally, start class right on time, introduce myself and credentials, be very organized and clear about course expectations and goals. I make a point to memorize all students by the 2nd week of classes, and let all of my students know that I am available before and after class to address their concerns/questions.

Dress professionally for all classes, start on time, say hello to all students by name as they come to class, be available and approachable.

Hi Janet,
It appears that you do a fine job creating your positive image as an educator. Thanks for leading by example.
Patricia

Hi Joel,
What a great gesture to welcome all of your new students via email. I typically call of my new starts. Most of the new starts are very grateful for the phone call.
Patricia

Hi Rosemary,
Oganization is a big key to being an effective instructor. Also, it adds great interest whenever the instructor shares their credentials.

By being organized
Presenting guest speakers who provide a point of reference
Explain your professional experience

I always am excited to meet new students
From the first class on I present a very positive image of what they are going to gain from this experience and from their peers

I normally email all my new starts, welcoming them to the class

Eula,
This is a good technique. I could tell that you really put your best effort at the start of the class. First impression is lasting and I believe your student will remember you for the rest of their lives, because you show concern and care when you print their pictures.
