Maintaining a professional image
Why is maintaining a professional distance from students an important part of class management?
It seperates professionalism from friendship. Also maintains a level of respect.
I think professionalism is very important for your students. You are setting an example for them when they enter the workplace. Your behaviors, attitude and performance will allow them to understand expectations beyond a classroom setting.
Hi Quebec,
I concur! As an instructor we have a lot on us, because our success depends on our students success. We must prepare our students thoroughly.
Patricia
Hi Ghia,
Be great role models for our students. Our students need professionals to emulate.
Patricia
It's true Instructors should manintain a professional image. Students do see as a role modle so you dont want to give them bad exsamples.
Students are looking to you for guidance. By maintaining a certain amount of distance, it ensures that you're being professional at all times. As an instructor, not only are you sharing your knowledge but you are responsible for preparing them for their own careers.
Hi Emmie,
We must lead by example. Our students do need to see professionalism while they are attending school.
Patricia
Maintaining a professional image is what is going to make the class a sucess. It helps the students focused on their goals of their world being a professional because they are seeing it live and in person each day.
Hi Susan,
Social medias can be realy risky! It is simple with social medias, do not befriend them until they become graduates; too much is at stake whenever you are considered to be a student's friend.
Patricia
Hi Jerry,
Nicely stated! Instructors are held in very high regards, and we should be great role models for our students.
Patricia
Hi Irina,
Students need to know that boundaries have been established and there are certain lines that are not to be crossed.
Patricia
Hi Cynthia,
We need to be the professional that we want our students to become.
Patricia
For one thing, we are instructors and not friends/buddies to the students. Providing a professional image will give the students of who you are as a person and as an instructor.
It does provide how the class can be managed. I usually get more relaxed by telling them what my career is and then turn to them and have them tell me what his or her goals are for being in class and for future goals as well.
It is important to maintain a professional distance as I find that you can make decisions regarding students in a more equitable way. It also helps students understand that be professional in the workplace is beneficial.
Absolutely, professional distance is very important.
Hello Jerry:
Regarding style of dress and off campus activities, I could not agree more. Being a part of professional organizations and maintaining a professional style of dress are two such examples that send a strong message of respect for the students and self.
Best,
Susan
Hello Ms. Scales and colleagues:
It is critical to maintain a professional distance as, if favortism is perceived by certain class members, it could alienate other cohorts of students in the course. In addition, one would never wish to have the purpose of any academic relationship between students and instructors misconstrued. Set the groundrules early, be consistent in your application of them, and maintain mutual respect.
One of the institutions I teach for has recently forbidden joining student social media groups on websites. I believe this is prudent, as new issues develop frequently with respect to some untested waters within social media.
Best,
Susan Weiss
Y ou don't want to become buddy's due to the fact of the instructor being a role model and to not let the "teacher's Pet" ideal creep in.
The instructor needs to establish that they are in charge.
