respect vs. like an instructor

What is more important?
Well,, to respect instructor is important but to like instructor is also important. I can respect an instructor if he or she shows students his or her knowledge or shares experience. However, it is sometimes hard to like the instructor as a human I know, hard to come closer to the instructor as general human relationship. I sometimes have lunch with my students, they like and respect me. So I cannot say which one is more important.

I agreee it is better to be respected because this in the long run will make for a better learning environment

Respect is everything and my only goal. I am not a people person and I tell my students that in many ways, light-heartedly. I am enthusiastic about the subject and energetic in my approach to helping them learn and understand my material. I would NEVER associate with a student outside of the classroom, and they all know it. My student survey results are always favorable. With only trying to earn their respect I have had the success that I want.

Hi Mohammed,
It is nice to be liked, but respect is crucial. A nice mesh is to be liked and respected.

I do agree with Julia. Respect is very important. We need to as professional as possible and we need to earn our respect. sometimes when looking to be liked we may not be as professional.

Hi Shirely,
A lot of our students are diamonds in the rough, and all they know is how to survive. They play to be very hard-nosed individuals. We have to teach them and show them what respect is all about.
Patricia

Hi Julia,
Respect is everything. Our students must really inderstand the importance of respect. As professionals, we need to demonstrate respect by respecting our students and colleagues.

I agree respect will also prepare them for the work force. Many times I fine that I must teach respect for themselves and their classmates but they show it for me.

In all things associated in communication, respect is required regardless whether you like me or not. By showing that you demand respect from your students sets the boundaries of your class. If a student does not like me, then I am sorry but you will respect me and abide by my classroom guidelines. Many students comes from many different backgrounds and have not been accustom to showing respect, or having any disciplined standards set in play as a child. Hopefully, since they have decided to make a change in their lives to gain a valid education, they realize behavior patterns, attitudes, etc., must be adjusted as well on this journey.
