studnet names
to help me with student names, I print out name plates for each student
to give out, and have the student put them in front of their station – I also up
date the name if the student goes by a nick name -- I use the name plates for
the first few class periods
Hi DaGabrielle,
This is a good practice to help to get to know your students. I have heard of some students using name tents for about the first two weeks.

I have my students do a student info log. I That way i can find out different things about what that like and what they expect from me. Doing this I can get to know them and learn easy ways to their names.
Hi Brandon,
I make it a point as well to memorize names on Day 1. Students feel a sense of great importance whenever you can call them by name. Students feel really special when you know their name. Name memorization is a great first step to rapport building with students.

I try from the very first day to memorize names. I go through the role on the first morning asking students tell me how to pronounce thier name correctly becuase it is very important to me to get it right.
I have a hard time also and tried to visualize the student's face too. One thing I have also tried is to have one student at a time to help me pass out worksheets. The more visual I have the better it is for me.
I think i will try this! I always have a hard time remembering students names
I have always had an issue with names. I can remember any number including my driver license number by heart but not names. I find with this, as with most things, repetition is the key. As mentioned in other posts, I use their name to address them and I test myself when passing back papers until I am comfortable in remembering.
This is what I do also but it still is very difficult to remember 27 names even in 4 days.
I am still struggling to learn all of the students' names by the third class but I find it is hugely beneficial to the class management. Somehow the personalization of the student makes her more willing to be engaged in the class.
Hi Deborah,
I like to take my roster and see if I can put a face with each name to help with name memorization.

Hi Andrew,
You also may want to test yourself when taking roll to help with name memorization. Also make a copy of your roster and see if you can put a face with each name.
Patricia
Hi Joy,
These are sure ways to help with name memorization. I know of some instructors who use name tents to help with remembering names.
Patricia
This is what I do also. I can place faces to their names then.
Thank you. when I am in my office I will go through the sign-in sheet and do that. I am getting better.
Andy
I state the students' name whenever I speak with them. Sometimes I will do a roll call just to help put a face with the name. Giving assignments on the first day also assists with name recollection as I grade the papers and then as I pass them back.
Hi Andrew,
Try name tents as well. Also when you take roll try to visualize the student's face while looking at the roll.

I am and always have had problems with peoples names. I have been trying a new aproach by using a seating chart. The first couple of classes I use the chart for their names, then I try and work without it. When I hand out homework I try to do it without the chart untill I get their names. I also tell them that it is not nice to change seats on me.
student names on a tag or a even a folder are a quick easy visual for you.
I am very bad with names. There is no one thing I work on harder with a new class than learning their names. With 7 new classes under my belt I have managed to get the learning process down by the 2nd class meeting. I'm not sure it is as critical as people may make it out to be - but it is certainly more helpful than harmful in gaining a classes respect.
