I agree that planning is the key. Without it, I do not know how I could be effective.
Some of the ways I avoid making instructor mistakes is by planning ahead of time and staying organized. Remember the saying, "If you fail to plan, you plan to fail!"
Repition, experience, and a willingess to learn from your own mistakes. I find that self reflection is a great way to grow as an instructor. If I am willing to honestly reflect on my own abilities and then build my abilities to decrease my weaknesses, I become a progressively better teacher.
I think you need to be able to read people and build from there. You must have a game plan and stick to it and be solid on your rules for class. It makes class and lab instruction easier if you are well versed in what you do.
1. Have a plan.
2. Know your plan.
3. Stick to the plan.
4. Realize that plans change!
