Respect breads respect.

In order to gain respect, you must give respect.

By showing my students respect, it become reciprocal.

I will often tell my students that I respect how hard they are working in school and what a great example they are for their children and others in their lives

Very true! I have seen many instructors with this problem. Not giving students respect and they bread an environment where the students have no respect for them. It is uncomfortable to even be in their classroom.

Hi Catherine,
Great point made! You normally get back from people what you give them. Give respect, and generally you will get it back.

I overheard my students doing Communication class homework the other day saying that it's a psychological principle of communication - people mirror back what you do in your interactions with them. Hence why if you raise your voice or whisper or become agitated or smile, the person you communicate with tends to do it right back at you.

Hadn't thought to apply that to respect but that is a great idea!

I beleive that respect implies that ther is more going on than we think at any given moment.
By showing my students respect, I am letting them
know that I value them and they are important to me. I agree it becomes reciprocl.
