MAINTAINING PROFESSIONALISM

In maintaining professionalism, you do not cease to be human. As long as you are confident in yourself and in your work, it is possible to maintain instructor/student boundaries and at the same time, have a good rapport.

Hi ELIZABETH,
Reminding students is always good. You are right, some of our students do not know anything about professionalism. It is our job to teach them how to be professional.

I also think it is important to remind students often about professionalism whenever possible. I have realized that some of them take the subject seriously, but others do not because they do not picture themselves in a professional environment, because they have never had the experience.

Hi Denise,
You are exactly right! We should model professionalism to our students at all times.

It is essential to maintain professionalism as an instructor. Walk it, talk it, act it, be the consummate professional. It is possible to have excellent rapport/respect with the students while at the same time maintaining professionalism. When they see this modeled, it will be easy for them to carry the example over into their work situations.

Yes it is very important to maintian professionalism. It lets you studants know you demand respect from the studants. Also if you demand respect then you must also give respect back. Most people will mirre the person they are with and give what you would like in return.

I agree. It is important to maintain an image of professionalism that reflects confidence, integrity, knowledge and experience in the field, and caring. These qualities do not exclude the human element in which one must strive to educate and help the student to gain confidence and succeed in their career, while maintaining instructor/student boundaries.
