Emulate success
I have always found that if you wnat to be successful find a SME in the field who is a true professional and emulate their good habits until they are your own. If you want to be successful do what successful people do.
I also feel that it is important for students to see the instructor as someone to look up to like a role model. I have always heard it only takes one person to make a difference in a person's life. The instructor as role model can fulfill this position.

One of my assingments in grad school was to interview an effective teacher about his/her methods of teaching. I learned a lot from this experience. the person I interviewed had been a department chair, with 20 years' experience in the field. He shared some valuable things with me.
