Being Friendly
This is my first term as an instructor. Some feedback I got is that the students think I am too nice. Some even say I have favorites. This is not the case, however, I do find it easier to call on students who are known for participating and I think that creates a perception. I am always working on this.
HI Stormy,
Do not put up with students not being cooperative; set the example. When students find out that you are not for nonsense they will act like they are suppose to.

Yes - it is uncomfortable to work with resistant students. It is easier to engage the friendly students. Being told you are too nice just means you don't have an enforced discipline procedure. It took me time to respond to the disruptive students. I was very shocked they even behaved that way. I still have difficulties with students who are resistant to cooperating.
