Preparing for a New Class
When I prepare for a new class, I do my best to read the material, take a look at the power points and take my time on the prep if I have the time to do so, I cannot be unprepared, if I am unprepared then I feel that I will not only let my studnets down but also myself. This way if I am prepared then I know what I am doing and I let my studnets believe I know what I am doing even if I don't, and I never let them know that it is the first time I have ever taught that particular class.
Some teachers think they can "wing it." However, students know. I have been teaching for a long time. Classes that I have taught often are still being evaluated - I am constantly looking for a better way. Preparation does not stop when you have taught the class before. It just keeps making the class better.
I also think you have to have some flexibility. Sometimes our plans don't work. We need to recognize that and adjust.
I am always prepared but I am still nervous that I will make a mistake, look stupid etc. I wonder if this feeling will ever go away.
Hi Naila,
Perparation is key! Students frown when the instructor is unprepared!

Hi Brandi,
It is human nature to be nervous. The more you teach, the less nervous you will become. Soon the nervousness will disappear. Preparation is a great way to minimize nervousness in the classroom.

I agree with what you are saying Verna. I try to do the same thing when I begin new classes, however; I am still nervous.
