Addressing students
Students should be addressed by there names. No one likes to be called by 'you'. I worked with a MD who didnt addressed employees by names until it was brought to his attention. Faculty should address these adults by name.
Addressing people by their names is a sign of respect. I make it a point to remember all names by jotting notes in my attendance ledger.

We should stick with our students real name. Nicknames are no place at the college level or any level for that matter. It is too unprofessional to have nicknames for students.

I've found that by calling role everyday and making eye contact with the student when I call their name helps. I've tried name trays, but it always ended up causing problems because the students would lose them.
It is important to know their names, I had one student last quarter who was very upset because a faculty member was using a nickname for her that she found less than desirable and was very concerned it would carry over to students calling her that name instead of her own.

A name tent is an index card folded in half, and you write the student's name on it. It stands on it's on because of the stiffness of the paper, and the way it is folded. Place these on the students' desks to help with name memorization.

I too like to utilize a seating chart to aid in remembering student names but I also like learning about them and how they "got to this school" etc I write that along their name in the seating chart. I tend to remember "situations" (Sally is divorced trying to raise 2 kids and wanted to better her and her children's lives).

I have always found that remembering some student names was easy, and others difficult. I can't explain why, so I started writing down their names on a "seating chart" while they are introducing themselves. I let them know that I am writing down their names because it helps me to learn who they are quicker.
