New Instructor

It is important to walk into class on your first day with your head held up high and shoulders back exuding confidence in yourself.

Hi Ashley,
Make a strong presence on the first day. I consider myself to be friendly, but fair and very firm.

I am a new instructor this year and I know that for me, struggeling to find the balance between of being to harsh and too nice was a challenge. You want to show authority but you don't want to be a tyrant.

I find that I when I am present new material I will speed through it. This leaves me with a lot of extra time in the class. To prevent this, I will write out relevant experiences that I have had in the field, so that I make sure to include them in my lecture. This also gives the students something tangible, not just abstract lecture.

Hi Brooke,
Preparation promotes great confidence! Being prepared is key!

I certainly agree with you being confident as an instructor. Even now we still need confidence in delivering the course content and demonstrate to the student about a certain skills.

I found that to be true as well! I sort of chuckled to myself (not out loud) in my first class, as things were going along fine, the students were calling me "Mr. Davis", etc....and I was the only one that knew that this was my first class ever!
