New Instructor nerves

I try to encourage our new instructors that everyone is nervous. But also that even on a bad day, you know more than your students, be confident and they will follow.

Hi Clive,
Preparation is a must! You must be a guru in your subject matter. Students really respect a knowledgeable instructor!

Whenever I teach a new class I make sure my knowledge of the subject is as "air tight" as possible. This gives me confidence in properly conveying the information needed for the course.

New instructor nerves are normal. When we experience some anxiety, it makes us focus better. It triggers our fight and flight responses. The best way to reduce our anxieties is being organized and prepared.

After 10 years of teaching I am always nervous on the first day of every start. Patricia, I think you are right; I love my job and I want to do well, I tell my students all the time "make me, make you understand." I welcome questions if even if they ask them over and over.

Hi Linda,
Having butterflies/nerves is a true sign that you want to do well. Our students depend on us and we have to perform well.

I think that it is a good thing to have nerves or butterflies before class begins. This is a sign that you truly care haow the class will turn out. It keeps you on your toes as an instructor and never complacent. Believing yourself as a professional in your field will give you the confidence that you need to teach the class. You have a lot to offer to the students!
