New Instructor

New instructors always have anxiety.

Thanks, I have coached for over 30 years, Kids that you work with are a great plus when entering the classroom. I have kids who have graduated who in turn tell there brothers and sisters to make sure they take my classes. biggest thing that I see happen with younger and new teachers is that they try to be a friend instead of a role model and someone that students can depend on to do the right thing and give the right direction

Excellent advice. Being completely prepared greatly reducing anxiety and once the lesson begins the butterflies ease up because you are prepared.

I have always found this to be true. While accomplished in my area of instruction and feeling very comfortable with public speaking, I still have to learn the institutions' protocols and procedures and this may take some time. Anxiety comes when a dean or program director queries your methodology and criticizes your style. This can be a steep learning curve in some institutions and always provides me with the most anxiety. Knowing there is competition for your position, it is imperative to keep a positive and open dialog with the directors and deans. The sooner you learn to fit the school's particular objectives and how they expect them to be met the less the anxiety.

No, not always. I have coached youth sports for years and feel that helped me move into teaching more easily.

The most important aspect the new instructor must remember is thoroughly prepare for the course. Through his preparation and command of the course he can establish respect for himself among the students. If the instructor has command over his subject and the instructor is caring for the students, most of the problems are already gone.
