Connecting with students
I feel that it is important to be able to relate to your students, but a professional relationship needs to be maintained. It is also important to present yourself as a professional, but able to be approachable so students feel safe to learn and ask questions.
Absolutely. I think there is a fine balance between being intimidating and unapproachable or friendly and unprofessional. An instructor needs to find somewhere in the center.
I agree. It is very important to be able to relate with students on a social level, but to keep the professional student and teacher dynamic. It's important to establish the "I care" factor about each student, but also to reemphasize that you are the instructor, and not a friend/buddy.
Students will respect a professor all the more if you are able to balance this dynamic which evidences that your primary objective is their education. An instructor must uphold the assignments and grades to ensure the success of each student in school. You have their best interests at heart.
Hi Jamie,
You understand this student/teacher relationship! It is easy, professional, yet approachable.
