Gaining respect

Gaining respect is not difficult if the teacher: Comes to class prepared
Is knowlegable of the subject
Speaks to each student while lecturing
Dresses appropriately,
and controls the class with a minimal amout of discipline, humor, and understanding.

The teacher is the role model.

Dress for success. Students will emulate your good and bad habits. Remember that "the camera is always rolling" That your professionalism, genuineism and attitude speak volumes

Hi Ramona,
We have to be the professional that we want our students to become. For some students we are there only role model. Let's lead by example.

I agree with you Kenneth we are the role models. I always show them respect because I want the same in return.

Kenneth,
Great post! I agree that we as instructors serve as a role model. We will set the tone of our classroom. When I first graduated I was told to walk into my classroom day 1 and to set the tone by being stern. I do not agree with that. You cannot gain respect by leading with fear. In order to gain respect by your students you should also treat each student with that same respect. I found that many students appreciate that behavior. Students will also respond better to an instructor who cares about them. By showing them respect this will come through.

Hi Kenneth,
I love you perspective! You fully understand how to gain respect!! We are certainly our students role models.
